From coastal cliffs to fairytale towns — natural, timeless spots to explore Portugal and capture your story.
If you're looking to explore more of Portugal beyond Lisbon — slowly, visually, and with heart — this list is for you.
These are places that feel like the real Portugal: where the light hits differently, the streets speak in tiles, and the ocean keeps its rhythm. Some are dramatic, others quiet. All of them are within 1–1.5 hours from Lisbon.
Whether you’re planning a weekend trip, a spontaneous detour, or just saving ideas for later — this is a collection of my favorite places to visit, walk through, and yes, maybe photograph too.
Each one includes a Google Maps link so you can easily check the vibe and plan your visit.
How this list is organized:
Beaches & Coastal Cliffs
Towns & Villages with Character
Nature Trails & Forest Paths
Viewpoints & Scenic Spots
So let's dive in.
Beaches & Coastal Cliffs

Note:
If you’re planning to visit one of the beaches — especially during the winter months — it’s a good idea to check the weather forecast and tide times in advance.
The Atlantic coast can be quite windy, and some beaches almost disappear during high tide.
You’ll get the best views (and the best experience) in calm weather and at low tide.
Towns & Villages with Character

Note:
Many of these towns have very old historical centers, with narrow cobblestone streets that were never meant for cars.
Parking in the heart of the town is often limited or restricted, and driving there can be stressful.
It’s usually best to park just outside the old center and enjoy the rest on foot — slowly, with time to notice the details.
Nature Trails & Forest Paths

Vila Sassetti trail (Sintra)
Capuchos forest (Sintra)
Mata dos Medos (Caparica pine forest)
Serra da Arrábida hidden road (Setúbal)
Serra do Risco cliff trails (Arrábida)
Barragem do Rio da Mula (Serra de Sintra)
Note:
Many of these nature trails and forest paths are not marked like typical tourist routes — they’re quiet, local, and sometimes a little wild.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and don’t rely solely on Google Maps deep in the woods — download offline maps or follow local signs where available.
And most importantly: take it slow. These places are best enjoyed without a rush.
Viewpoints & Scenic Spots

Cabo da Roca cliffs (at golden hour)
Miradouro da Boca do Inferno (Cascais)
Convento da Arrábida (viewpoint only)
Note:
Scenic viewpoints in Portugal often come with spectacular views — and no guardrails.
Be mindful of your footing, especially if you're visiting with children or during windy days.
Some spots require a short uphill walk, but the reward is always worth it: light, space, and that quiet wow moment.
Before You Go
Every place on this list has its own rhythm. Some are perfect for early morning walks, others shine at golden hour.
Save it. Share it. Use it as a starting point — not just for a good photo, but for a beautiful experience.
And if you ever feel like turning one of these visits into a memory-filled photo session, you know where to find me.
