Why Sleep Matters More Than Light

Before We Talk About Golden Hour, Let’s Talk About Your Baby’s Nap

One of the first things I ask when planning a family photoshoot in Portugal is not about the location, outfits, or even golden hour. I ask about your child’s sleep schedule. Because if you have a baby or a toddler, you already know this: an overtired child doesn’t care about beautiful light.

In Portugal sunset can be quite late in spring and summer. For adults, it feels romantic: soft light, warm air, ocean breeze. For a two-year-old who skipped a nap, it can feel overwhelming. And here is something I truly believe: we can work with almost any light. We can adjust angles, shift the location slightly, move closer, simplify the frame, change the direction we shoot in. But adjusting the mood of a sleepy or hungry child is almost impossible.

When a child is tired, photos become about managing behavior.

When a child feels rested and safe, photos become about connection. And connection is what we are actually there for. That’s why I build family sessions around your child’s rhythm — not around the sunset. Sometimes we shoot in the morning, sometimes right after the first nap, and sometimes at home, where everything already feels familiar and calm.

Beautiful light matters, of course it does. But a calm child matters more. And when those two align, that’s when something real happens. If you’re planning a family photoshoot in Portugal with a baby or toddler, start with sleep. The rest, we can gently adapt.
